A Self-Directed, Responsible, Life-Long Learner

Learning is a life-long journey. Throughout my career I will be learning from students, colleagues, as well as my community. Through my own eagerness to learn, I will model for students the importance of continuing to discover and grow throughout our lives. As a Catholic educator, I strive to help students become self-directed, lifelong learners and express certain qualities such as respect for themselves and others (CGE4a). This is the first specific Catholic Graduate Expectation within the arena of a self-directed, responsible, lifelong learner because it is integral to respect oneself in order to develop the other qualities. In order to understand what it means to respect ourselves and others, we look to God for guidance. The reflection below comparing Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to the Lord’s Prayer demonstrates the importance of God’s central role in our lives in helping us to fully develop into our true selves, to become “self-actualized” in Maslow’s terms.
The reign of God is the action of God in our lives. Jesus proclaimed that God offers to take over our lives: to reign in our hearts, to transform us, to enable us to grow into wholeness and to love generously and to be true to ourselves – and in that way to be faithful to God. (Language of the Heart, Cooper, p. 215)
